On the last weekend of June, the whole city of San Francisco explodes into a rainbow burst of music, dancing and excitement for Pride. Hundreds of thousands of people line the streets and descend on the annual downtown parade and festival, making it the largest LGBTQ celebration in the country. The two-day bash, produced by the San Francisco Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Pride Celebration Committee, takes place in front of City Hall at Civic Center Plaza — the same spot where Harvey Milk addressed the crowd in 1978 during “Gay Freedom Day.” Be sure to check out our seven tips and many highlights to help you survive and thrive at San Francisco Pride.
49th Annual San Francisco Pride
Theme: Generations of Resistance

– Sun., June 30, 2019 (11 a.m.–6 p.m.)

San Francisco Pride is one of the oldest and largest LGBTQIA parades in the world, and the massive annual parade down Market Street is the main highlight of Pride. Expect more than 200 parade contingents and floats with tons of fabulous eye candy representing a huge range of causes and beliefs, including the 400-plus extremely loud (and proud) Dykes on Bikes motorcycle group. Contingents march through the heart of the city, along Market Street, with more than 100,000 spectators. The parade kicks off Sunday, June 30, 2019 at 10:30 a.m. at Market and Beale and ends at Eighth Street near the Civic Center area.
Limited grandstand seating on Market Street between 7th and 8th Streets is available for purchase through SF Pride’s website. Click here for more information.
The Pride Celebration at Civic Center Plaza, June 29 -30, features not only a main stage with music, competitions and comedy, but also 300-plus exhibitors and more than 20 community-run stages. These include the Faerie Freedom Village, with a glitter gateway of live cabaret and avant-garde artists, a Leather Alley “carnival” to get schooled on S&M, the Cheer San Francisco stage with high-flying cheerleader stunts, and a chance to get your same-sex two-steppin’ in at the Country-Western Dance Corral. In addition to the parade on Sunday, the two-day weekend celebration in the heart of the city boasts almost one million attendees annually. More information is available here.
If you’re looking for a slightly more intimate experience, the official SF Pride VIP Party is worth considering. Under the Rotunda in San Francisco’s magnificent City Hall, the party offers a hosted bar, delicious hors d’oeuvres, and three rooms of non-stop entertainment. Adjacent to all of the activities at the celebration in Civic Center Plaza, this event sells out every year, so be sure and get tickets early. More information is available here.
