Didn’t bother making reservations? Want to avoid crowds? If you’re willing to get a little more outdoorsy than an RV at a hookup, the Bureau of Land Management has a lot of options for you.
The BLM manages millions of acres of U.S. land — one-eighth of the country’s landmass — and plenty of it is available for free camping. As long as you follow the rules of good campers, there’s a whole world of free natural beauty awaiting you.
Most of the BLM’s land is in Nevada and Utah, but there are also quite a few places in California that offer free public lands. Some sites even have campgrounds with vault toilets, if you’re less willing to go completely off the grid.
Here are some rules to keep in mind while you’re on BLM land (or camping anywhere, for that matter):
- Never litter
- Don’t disturb plants, rocks, minerals, etc.
- Supervise fires at all times
- Pack out what you pack in
